VLN: Phoenix Racing again with no racing luck at the penultimate VLN round

Phoenix Racing Press Release

Just like two weeks before, fortune again failed to smile on Phoenix Racing at the penultimate round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring.
The driver trio of Frank Stippler and the brothers Johannes and Ferdinand Stuck that has scored a previous VLN race win this season in the Audi R8 LMS ultra finished in a disappointing 27th place overall in the field of 165 vehicles that had started the race. Suspension damage had caused the team to suffer a two-lap gap.

After qualifying was started with a delay due to morning fog and reduced to 60 minutes Frank Stippler in the white-blue TÜV-Rheinland R8, because of long yellow periods, did not find a clear lap on the Nordschleife for setting a top time so that Stippler/Stuck/Stuck had to start the race from an unusual position 19 on the grid.

However, after the start the seasoned Nordschleife campaigner Stippler managed to battle his way forward to fourth place, with a gap of just two seconds separating him from the front runners. “That shows that we were absolutely in contention,” said the former DTM driver. On lap six though his quick drive was stopped by a suspension defect and a lot of time was already lost on the slow drive back to the pits. Despite the swift action by the Phoenix mechanics, following the repair the Audi went back out with a gap of about two laps, the chances of clinching a top position having vanished into thin air. “We’ve got to analyse this damage now,” commented Stippler. “At the season’s finale we’re going to give our best again once more.”

The Stuck brothers were naturally disappointed as well. “We’d have had good chances of winning this race or at least finishing on the podium because our car had superb performance just like the whole team. Now we need to fully concentrate on the last VLN race,” said Ferdinand Stuck. And his brother Johannes added, “Of course, we’re not happy on the whole. But looking at the race from the driver’s perspective and seeing the lap times puts a smile on our lips after all. This minor defect had a major effect and robbed us of all chances. That was really a bitter pill. At the finale we need – and are determined – to do better.”

The last VLN race of the 2013 season will be held on Saturday, 26 October.

GT Sprint: Mission accomplished! MTM Team and Thomas Schöffler win the title for Audi

MTM Press Release

Vallelunga: 8th and last race of the GT Sprint Series 2013

“It was no walk in the park but a championship is not decided in a single race.” Roland Mayer, Managing Director of MTM GmbH, is satisfied with the way the season has gone, although the team was unfortunately unable to clinch a happy conclusion before the gates of the Eternal City. “We had two pit stops because of flat tyres and had to look on our competitors fighting for the top”, was how press officer Karla Kanz explained the unaccustomed sight of the black and red mtm Audi R8 LMS at the back of the field. And yet the first qualifying round had looked like presaging an exciting contest with the Ukraine team’s Ferrari 458s. Thomas Schöffler qualified for the third place on the starting grid but had to settle for a lower ranking in the race. But his joy at the first title in his still young career predominates: “the performance curve has become ever steeper, we raised our game from one race to the next, were never defenceless against the Ferraris’ numerical superiority and often enough won or at at least scored regularly and that is also why we deserved to win the title.”

Schöffler, who once again shared his cockpit with the Swede Johan Kristoffersson, notched up a total of 226 points, second-placed Glauco Solieri in his Porsche 911, managed a tally of 198, just two more than the Ukrainian Andrii Kruglyk in a Ferrari 458. The MTM Audi R8 LMS and Thomas Schöffler clearly dominated this year’s series. Since this championship started in 2010, there has only ever been one previous occasion when the Audi R8 drew attention to itself: last year in Pergusa the Italian team Merendino/Di Benedetto took 6th place.

The period after a race is the prelude to the next. But whether MTM confronts the pack again next year is as yet undecided. We do however have this utterance by boss Roland Mayer to go by: “there is no better advertising than racing successes over miles, metres and seconds.”

The Killarney circuit in Cape Town hosted the penultimate round of the 2013 Bridgestone Production Cars last weekend.
A total of four Audi S4 quattro cars represented the Audi squad in the premier South African saloon racing championship, coming from Terry Moss Racing, VMP Motorsport and Ferodo Racing. The Audi drivers performed very well in all three races and battled all day long with arch rivals from BMW and Subaru.

Our friends from Street Motion were on site and had great coverage of the event. Here is a selection of beautiful photos featuring the privately run Audi S4s.
