Audi R8 LMS Cup: Series enters decisive phase in Shanghai

Audi R8 LMS Cup Press Release

  • Alex Yoong tops leaderboard with three races left in the season
  • Shanghai could decide who takes the 2013 trophy
  • Rahel Frey returns after racing for Audi in Europe

Beijing/Shanghai, October 24, 2013 – The Audi R8 LMS Cup returns to China with Rounds 9 and 10 of the 2013 season to be held at Shanghai International Circuit from October 25-27 (Live broadcast on: www.audir8lmscup.com). The Shanghai races will be part of the Volkswagen Sports Car Champion Festival (SCCF).

With only three races left to go, the 2013 season of the Audi R8 LMS Cup is about to enter its decisive phase. Coming to Shanghai, Alex Yoong tops the leaderboard with 141 points, after a double win on his home circuit, Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit, in August. Second overall is Adderly Fong on 132 points, ahead of last year's Audi R8 LMS Cup champion, Marchy Lee, with 121 points.

"I expect tough competition between the top three. Additionally, Rahel Frey and Franky Cheng Congfu could play a vital role by pushing for the podium and taking away valuable points from the current leaders. Shanghai is very important for determining the outcome of this year's cup", says Rene Koneberg, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia.

The Shanghai International Race Circuit in China is home to the annual F1 Chinese Grand Prix. At around 5.5 kilometers long, with 16 turns and 6 straights, the circuit is sure to push both the professional and amateur driver's skills to the limit.

The Audi R8 LMS Cup is the first brand cup in the history of Audi. After its successful maiden season in China in 2012, the sprint race series has been expanding in Asia this year, with new races in South Korea, Malaysia and Macau.

The Shanghai race weekend is part of the second annual Sports Car Champions Festival held by Volkswagen Group. The festivities give fans an opportunity to experience sports car culture up close. After Shanghai, the final race of the 2013 Audi R8 LMS Cup will be held in Macau in November.

DTM: Audi driver Rockenfeller wins ADAC voting

Audi Press Release

•   DTM Champion is “ADAC Motorsportsman of the Year 2013”
•   Judges recognize sporting success and fair conduct
•   Rockenfeller: “I know how valuable this accolade is”

Ingolstadt, October 24, 2013 – On the race track, Mike Rockenfeller has already been ‘number one’ this year. And Europe’s largest automobile club has now made the Audi factory driver its number one as well: A panel of expert judges voted the DTM Champion “ADAC Motorsportsman of the Year 2013.”

Walter Röhrl, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel: This list of leading lights of German motorsport now includes Mike Rockenfeller as well, who, following his victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the 2010 season, has made another dream come true on winning the DTM title at the wheel of an Audi RS 5 DTM. “When I joined Audi, my aims were to win Le Mans and the DTM – and I’ve achieved both,” says the 29-year-old. “Now, being ADAC Motorsportsman of the Year on top of that is incredible. I know how valuable this accolade is and can only thank the judges – and of course all who have helped me win the DTM this year.” Among other things, the judges, in their supporting justification, recognized Mike Rockenfeller’s success, fair conduct and the fact that he stood his ground and prevailed in an extremely difficult sporting environment.

Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich was delighted about the selection of Rockenfeller who will be celebrating his 30th birthday next week: “I think there’s no one in the DTM paddock who begrudged ‘Rocky’ the title this year. Mike not only drove a really superb season. He was also always fair in the duels with his rivals. I think this was exactly what impressed the judges, too.”

“I can only congratulate ADAC on this choice as well,” says Dieter Gass, Head of DTM at Audi Sport. “Mike is a worthy DTM Champion, a driver who epitomizes motorsport in Germany – and simply a nice guy. At Audi, we value this trait just as much as the fans in the paddock do for whom ‘Rocky’ always finds time.”
