RCCO: Audi Slotcar Cup 2013 at Oschersleben

By Johan Laubscher

Slot car racing is a very popular sport amongst many of the Audi Sport personnel. A special slot car tournament was held at the DTM round at Oschersleben this weekend: The Audi Slotcar Cup 2013.

A special and long slot car track was set up in the Audi hospitality centre. Many Audi Sport personnel, race drivers and guests took part in the event. Their weapons of choice were 1:24 Audi RS5 DTM slot cars, all liveried to match the real 2013 Audi Sport DTM contenders.

We have included a selection of photos from the SpeedPool flickr page, the full gallery can be seen HERE.

It is always great to see the fun and more laid-back side of an organisation as serious and professional as Audi Sport:

ADAC GT Masters: Second place for Prosperica C.Abt Racing Audi in Slovakia Ring race 1

By Tarek Ramchani

The Audi R8 LMS ultra performed very well today at Solvakia Ring. ADAC GT Masters race 1 gave the Audi squad great satisfaction.

Christer Jöns and Markus Winkelhock driving the #28 Audi R8 LMS ultra from Prosperia C.Abt Racing finished in a strong second. The two drivers performed very well battling hard on a very wet track. Their team-mates Christopher Mies and René Rast with the #27 Audi R8 LMS ultra finished the 1-hour sprint race in fifth place. The third Audi from Prosperia C.Abt Racing had a strong pace too, the #26 R8 LMS ultra driven by Rahel Frey and Christopher Haase was eighth.

The remaining three Audi R8 LMS ultra were outside the top 10. The #1 car from MS Racing shared by Sebastian Asch and Florian Stoll was fifteenth. The #16 Audi from THE BOSS YACO RACING was seventeenth with drivers Philip Geipel and Filip Sladecka. Unfortunately the #100 Audi from MS Racing with Daniel Dobitsch and Aditya Patel was not classified.

Race victory went to the #12 BMW Z4 GT3 from DB Motorsport. Third behind the second place Audi was the #19 BMW Z4 GT3 from PIXUM Team Schubert. Race 1 results can be seen here.

DTM: Audi with strong qualifying performance

Audi Press Release

  •          Six Audi RS 5 DTM cars on the first five rows of the grid
  •          Mike Rockenfeller achieves new track record at Oschersleben
  •          Jamie Green on front row for the first time for Audi

Ingolstadt/Oschersleben, September 14, 2013 – With a strong qualifying performance Audi has worked out a good starting base for round eight of the DTM at Oschersleben (Sunday, starting at 13:15 live on ‘Das Erste’). Leader of the standings Mike Rockenfeller in the Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM of Audi Sport Team Phoenix, on position four, will be starting the race clearly in front of his two fiercest rivals in the battle for the title.

Rain showers in the first two qualifying segments made for changeable conditions when being out on track at the right moment was of paramount importance. Rockenfeller proved his strong nerves in this situation yet again. When at the end of Q1 the black and white checkered flag was shown the leader of the standings was only in 18th place and would thus have been eliminated early. But ‘Rocky’ only needed a single lap to improve to second place.

The leader of the standings confirmed his strong form with positions three, one and four in the subsequent segments of qualifying. Setting a time of 1m 20.129s in Q3, he achieved a new track record that was not equaled in Q4 – not even by the leader of the standings himself, who secured position four on the grid.

Right in front of Rockenfeller, Jamie Green (Red Bull Audi RS 5 DTM) will be starting the race from the front row. The Briton from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline only had to admit defeat to title defender Bruno Spengler in the BMW. “I’m very pleased with position two on the grid,” said Green. “It wasn’t easy today, especially with the rain in Q1 and Q2. My engineer Alex (Stehlig) did a good job because we were always out on track at the right time – and that was crucial. My Q4 lap wasn’t perfect; in turn 10, I was running a bit far on the outside. That cost nearly a tenth of a second.”

Position six on the grid was secured by Filipe Albuquerque in the Audi Financial Services RS 5 DTM of Audi Sport Team Rosberg. Miguel Molina (Audi RS 5 DTM), Timo Scheider (AUTO TEST Audi RS 5 DTM) and Adrien Tambay (Audi ultra RS 5 DTM) took positions eight, ten and eleven but will all move up by one position as Mercedes-Benz driver Gary Paffett received a five-position grid penalty following a violation of the regulations. Mattias Ekström (Red Bull Audi RS 5 DTM) and Edoardo Mortara (Playboy Audi RS 5 DTM) are starting the eighth DTM race of the year from positions 13 and 17.

“With six Audi cars in the top ten we can be very pleased,” commented Dieter Gass, Head of DTM at Audi Sport. “The RS 5 DTM was fast right from the beginning today and managed to set a new track record in qualifying. Mike (Rockenfeller) showed strong nerves throughout the qualifying session and has created a good starting base for tomorrow while his two fiercest rivals are relatively far at the rear. I’m happy for Jamie (Green) as well. He’ll be starting from the front row as an Audi driver for the first time.”

BTCC: Strong third for Rob Austin Audi in Rockingham qualifying

By Tarek Ramchani

After a maiden pole position last time out in Scotland, Rob Austin showed again a very strong pace today in Rockingham qualifying. The team owner and driver of the #13 Audi A4 NGTC qualified in a strong third.

Rob Austin with his WIX Racing backed Audi set a time of 1:22.588. Rob Austin will start third behind the two factory MG cars of poleman Jason Plato and the second placed Sam Tordoff. "Sherman" was only 0.238 behind Jason Plato's lap time. A great result for a true privateer effort beating the factory Honda team as well the strong independent rivals from BMW, Ford and Toyota.

A positive qualifying session for Will Bratt too. The driver of the #14 Audi A4 NGTC made into the top 10, with a fine tenth in a very demanding British Touring Cars field.

All three races are set for tomorrow. Fingers crossed for Rob Austin Racing and their two drivers.

VLN: Audi TT RS victories in SP4T and SP3T at the Nürburgring

By Johan Laubscher

The German VLN Endurance Championship held its sixth meeting of the season at the Nürburgring today. It was an unlucky race for the R8 LMS ultra competitors, but it was certainly a good day for the Audi TT RS entrants.

Only two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars were entered this weekend, a single entry each from Twin Busch Motorsport and Phoenix Racing.

Twin Busch Motorsport was the highest placed Audi during qualifying, having taken fourth place ahead of the Phoenix car in ninth. The #1 LMS Engineering TT RS claimed eighteenth overall and pole in the SP3T class. Rotek Racing and their #249 TT RS was on pole for the SP4T class, twenty-forth overall.

The Audi TT RS teams stole the show for Audi at the four hour VLN race today. LMS Engineering made it a victorious comeback and debut for their #1 Audi TT RS. They achieved class pole position, class victory and they finished in a very impressive sixth overall. It was also an Audi 1-2-3-4-5-6 in SP3T, as the #334 Møller Bil Motorsport TT RS finished second ahead of the Raeder Motorsport #331 TT RS in third and the #290 TT RS in fourth. Audi TTS race cars also finished fifth and sixth in SP3T. The TT RS clean sweep was completed by the Rotek Racing #249 taking victory in SP4T.

Both Audi R8 LMS ultra entries faced problems today. The #15 Phoenix Audi finished twenty-fifth overall and the Twin Busch Motorsport #44 Audi unfortunately retired after running as high as second.

The next VLN round will be taking place on 28 September.

DTM: Watch LIVE DTM qualifying at Oschersleben

The DTM qualifying session is underway at Oschersleben. The Audi squad performed really well in the practice session earlier this morning.

Six Audi RS 5 DTM cars were inside of the top ten during practice. Rocky and Phoenix Racing topped the free practice at Oschersleben.

Live timing is available HERE.

You can watch the qualifying session right here, embedded from the live YouTube stream:

This is what Mental Illness Looks Like!

The screen capture which you see above (click to enlarge) is taken from the hip, progressive, forward-thinking online publication known as Salon.Com. Give it a read-through, and pay special attention to the parts which I have underscored in red.

I had to review this passage about ten times before I could believe that I was actually reading what I was reading. But yes, apparently a penis can be "female", and a vagina can be "male" if you just make up your mind to . . . oh. . . .call them that, I guess! I mean, really, what's in a name? And what truly seals the deal is our writer's assurance that:
"Our bodies are not objective pieces of matter that pre-exist the inscription of social meaning."
Well who'd-a-thunk it? All these years, I was pretty doggone sure my body was an objective piece of matter that pre-existed the inscription of social meaning. But hell man, what did I know? I just had to get schooled, didn't I? So I guess that makes me one of the cool kids now, eh?

So dear reader, here is what I want you to do. I want you to strip naked, and stand in front of the mirror, and take inventory of what you've got. Based on what you see in the mirror, you might conclude that you are inherently "male" or that you are  inherently "female", but either way I would hasten to assure you that none of it pre-exists the inscription of social meaning. Thus,  you do not really have a "penis" or a "vagina" - those things are mere constructs after all - and they do not actually exist.  Well no, that's not right. What I meant to say was, that they do not actually PRE-exist. Do you follow me?

Hey, it's like. . . mind over matter. Or something. So go ahead and inscribe social meaning to what you see in the mirror, and it will start existing.

GT Asia: Front row starting positions for Absolute Racing Audis at Sepang

By Johan Laubscher

GT Asia has resumed in Malaysia this weekend, hosting the fourth meeting at Sepang. Absolute Racing is again out in full force and they have taken very good spots in qualifying.

Absolute Racing is fielding a total of five Audi cars this weekend, three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars in the GT3 class, and two older Audi R8 LMS variants in the GTM class.

Their team is split into two main parts. The R8 LMS ultra cars are entered under the team/entrant name of “Team R8 LMS ultra”, which represents three customers: J-Fly Racing, Tunewear and Team Hong Kong Racing. The #7 J-Fly Racing car is racing in its new red/black/white livery for the first time in GT Asia, a livery which they debuted on the car at the Sepang 12 Hours two weeks ago. The #7 is driven by Jeffrey Lee and Marchy Lee. The #888 Tunewear R8 LMS ultra is driven by Francis Hideki Onda and Alex Yoong. The #98 Team Hong Kong Racing R8 LMS ultra is driven by Philip Ma and Cong Fu Cheng.

Two Audi R8 LMS Cup entries have also been added to the Absolute Racing GT Asia squad this weekend, both entered in the GTM class. The first is a second J-Fly Racing entry, the blue #78 Audi R8 LMS of  Benjamin Lee and Craig Liu. The final Audi entry is that of the Tiger Racing Team, who also recently took part in the Sepang 12 hours. The #77 R8 LMS is driven by Jacky Yeung and Carlo van Dam.

Two front row qualifying positions and pole position in the GTM class highlighted the Saturday for the Audi camp. During the first session the #888 of Onda and Yoong qualified on the front row in second place. They were followed by the #98 in fifth and the #7 in sixth. In twelfth overall was the #77 R8 LMS of Yeung and van Dam, who qualified on pole in the GTM class. The #78 was sixteenth overall, fourth in class.

Another front row starting position was achieved during the second qualifying session, with the #7 of Marchy and Jeffrey Lee taking second. They were followed by the #888 in sixth and the #98 in seventh. The #77 was again twelfth overall, but third in class, followed by the #78 in fifteenth, again fourth in class.

Pole position for race one went to the #007 Craft Racing Aston Martin, followed by the #2 Asia Racing Team’s Porsche 911 taking pole for race two. The results can be seen HERE.

Switzerland ups legal prostitution age from 16 to 18 years old to align with rest of European Union

YAY! Some GOOD NEWS for a change! Switzerland just raised the legal age of doing prostitution and pornography from 16 to 18! Of course we don’t think that anyone of ANY age should be doing porn or being prostituted, but at least this is a step in the right direction! Every bit helps, and hopefully this will help prevent many teen girls in Switzerland from doing porn or prostitution at the ages

ADAC GT Masters: Audi on pole at Solvakia Ring - Prosperia C Abt Racing impressive

By Tarek Ramchani

The German ADAC GT Masters is at the Solvakia Ring this weekend, the penultimate meeting of the season. Six Audi R8 LMS ultra cars are taking part in the event, with great performances for the Audi squad in day 1.

Two qualifying sessions were held this afternoon. In the first session the best ranked Audi R8 LMS ultra was fifth, with drivers Christopher Mies and René Rast. The two drivers are sharing the #27 Audi R8 LMS ultra from Prosperia C Abt Racing. The #28 Audi from Prosperia C Abt Racing was eighth, with Christer Jöns and Markus Winkelhock. The #1 Audi R8 LMS from MS Racing driven by Sebastian Asch Florian Stoll was tenth. The remaining three Audi R8 LMS ultra were outside of the top 10.

Later the second qualifying session turned out to be magical for Audi. A brilliant 1-2-3 for Prosperia C Abt Racing and their Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. Pole position went to Christer Jöns and Markus Winkelhock, with their #28 Audi. In second place was the #26 R8 LMS ultra of Rahel Frey and Christopher Haase. Third was the #27 car of drivers Christopher Mies and René Rast. This was the first time for the newly formed team with such an impressive performance in the demanding ADAC GT Masters. BTCC: Rob Austin Racing Audi aiming high at Rockingham

By Tarek Ramchani

The British Touring Car Championship is at Rockingham this weekend, for round 8 of the season. After a magical meeting last time out at Knockhill, Rob Austin Racing is aiming high with their Audi A4 NGTC cars.

Rob Austin was a true hero in Scotland. A historical pole position and then two podium results with his WIX Racing backed #13 Audi A4. Bad luck hit his team-mate, Will Bratt, with the sister #14 Audi A4.

The only Audi team in the BTCC field has improved a lot in the last few races, after all the bad luck in the first half of the season. The Audi A4 NGTC, one of only a few RWD cars in the championship, is able to match the pace of the factory supported cars from Honda and MG, as well as the top independents efforts from BMW and Ford.

Rob Austin, the team owner/driver, is optimistic for the Rockingham meeting:

"I think we could be in reasonable shape again, particularly in race trim provided it stays dry. The track surface is very abrasive which should favour the rear-wheel-drive machinery, such as Sherman. I think there could be some very interesting final few laps if the RWD cars are hovering near the front after two thirds distance" (quotes sourced from BTCC Crazy).

Two free practice sessions followed by the qualifying sessions are set for tomorrow. All three races will be held on Sunday.

FIA WEC: Audi looks forward to WEC premiere in Texas

Audi Press Release

  •          FIA World Endurance Championship visits Austin for the first time
  •          Audi R18 e-tron quattro unbeaten so far in the 2013 season
  •          Head of Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich: “Important race in a very significant market for Audi”

Ingolstadt, September 13, 2013 – Round five of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Austin in the U.S. state of Texas has a particularly high significance for Audi. In America, the brand’s sports car program began 14 years ago, Audi won the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) nine times in succession and the Sebring 12 Hours eleven times – most recently in March. Furthermore, the sales statistics in America have been developing positively for Audi for years. At Austin, on September 22, the brand with the four rings is aiming to achieve its second sports car victory in the United States this year. It would mark the sixth consecutive win for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro as well.

Totally new territory: The 5.515-kilometer Circuit of the Americas south-east of Austin was only inaugurated last year. Neither Audi Sport Team Joest nor the six factory drivers know the challenging roller-coaster track featuring 20 turns and 41 meters of vertical difference. Just like most recently at São Paulo, the entrants will be running counter-clockwise in the WEC round at Austin – a direction that is unusual in racing. While the drivers are preparing for the track by studying videos and practicing in the simulator, the engineers of Audi Sport have calculated the conditions for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro’s run in advance by means of mathematical simulations.

Audi Sport Team Joest may be facing another challenge. Outside temperatures above 30 degrees centigrade are not unusual in this region in September. In 2000, when the Audi R8 won at Dallas/Texas, the thermometers even rose to above 40 degrees.

Aside from the competition in the field, the two Audi driver squads are not cutting each other any slack either. Most recently, cars number ‘1’ and ‘2’ were separated by just five hundredths of a second in qualifying in Brazil. Each of the two teams has celebrated two WEC victories this year. In the drivers’ World Championship, the Le Mans winners Loïc Duval/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish (F/DK/GB) continue to be the front runners. But Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer (CH/D/F) have reduced their gap by eight to 22 points at São Paulo. And Austin only marks the beginning of the second half of the WEC season.

The reliability of the Audi R18 e-tron quattro is a staple in this fierce sporting competition. Ever since its debut in the 2012 season, the trend-setting diesel hybrid sports car has clinched eight victories, five of them in succession since March 2013. The efficient World Championship winning race car has never retired due to a technical defect to date.

But North America is not only important territory for Audi in motorsport. The new-car market in the United States has seen a positive development as well. By the end of 2012, 139,310 premium automobiles of the brand were sold in the United States, 18.5 percent more than the year before. Thus, Audi of America within five years increased the customer base of the four rings in the USA by nearly 50 percent (2007 deliveries: 93,506 cars). Growth continued in the first half of 2013. From January to June, the number of Audi deliveries in the United States went up by another 14 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Fans will be able to watch the race in Texas on the internet as well. Audi is broadcasting the action by live streaming on www.audi-motorsport.com. Additional information is available via the Audi Sport App, on Twitter and Facebook.

Topics of the weekend

-Will Audi achieve its sixth LMP race victory of the season at Austin?
-Will the season’s first “hot” race be awaiting the teams in Texas?
-Will the gap in the standings between Loïc Duval/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish and Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer continue to shrink or will the Le Mans winners be able to extend their advantage?
-Will the new circuit at Austin become one of the drivers’ favorite tracks?
-With how much enthusiasm will the Texan spectators receive the WEC?

Quotes by the officials

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): “Austin promises to be a technically challenging track. The drivers judge it to be at a very high level. I’m hoping for our squad and the car to be doing well there right away. It’s an important race in a very significant market for Audi, so we’re aiming to achieve a good result.”

Chris Reinke (Head of LMP): “For Audi, America is a very important market for production cars and we’ve celebrated many victories in racing there as well. We’re aiming to do so again. Continuing our string of victories holds the greatest sporting appeal, with the race track being absolutely new territory for all of us adding a further thrill. We’re rigorously preparing for this variety of challenges.”

Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest): “For Audi Sport Team Joest, contesting a round in America is almost like running in a home race – after all these years in the American Le Mans Series. We’ve never been to Austin though. We’re looking forward to it – not only to the track but to the attractive city as well.”

Facts and quotes by the Audi drivers

Marcel Fässler (37/CH), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
-Celebrated his second WEC victory of the season with his team-mates at São Paulo
“At Austin, besides a sensational race track beautiful surroundings are awaiting us. I really like driving in America because all the races there have a special atmosphere. The track was very demanding even in the simulator. The combinations of turns with their different speeds and the radii make for a rhythm we’ve got to get used to first. Positioning the car with great precision is another important aspect on the relatively wide track. We’re all looking forward to this race.”

André Lotterer (31/D), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
-After the race at São Paulo, flew to Peru and then to New York
“We’re competing on a race track that’s new for all of us. We’ve got two possibilities to prepare for the event: studying videos of other racing series and working with the simulator. On location, we’ll have to familiarize ourselves with the track as quickly as possible. I’ve heard a lot of positive comments about this track. The first section at Austin reminds me of the circuit at Suzuka. But there are several hairpins as well, which are typical for new tracks. I’m excited about the mix and hoping for our R18 e-tron quattro to be fast there too.”

Benoît Tréluyer (36/F), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
-Together with his team-mates the Frenchman reduced the gap in the standings by eight to 22 points
-Has celebrated a previous victory in the USA this year with Marcel Fässler and Oliver Jarvis
“I like driving in the United States and am very much looking forward to Austin. America has an enthusiastic racing audience. I’ve watched footage of a few racing series that have run there. It’s an interesting track and I always enjoy getting to know new circuits.”

Loïc Duval (31/F), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
-Married his partner Gaëlle on Saturday after the race at São Paulo
-Is getting to know a new race track for the second consecutive time
“After São Paulo, Austin is the second track I’ll be racing on for the first time this year. Even on television the track looks really beautiful. It’s hilly, technically challenging, is very fast in some places and has several long corners. It seems to be a good mix that’ll definitely be great fun in the R18 e-tron quattro. And Austin is an attractive city as well.”

Tom Kristensen (46/DK), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
-The Dane drove the fastest race lap at São Paulo
-In 2002, was ALMS Champion in America with Audi
“I’ve always particularly enjoyed racing in the USA. I’ve only heard good things about the track and the surroundings so far. Each lap will offer some variety. Sector 1 contains many fast turns, sector 2 is shaped by hairpin turns and sector 3 is a Mickey Mouse section with many slow corners. So that requires driving stability at high speed, good acceleration power and a very agile car for the last sector.”

Allan McNish (43/GB), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
-In 2000, 2006 and 2007 won the ALMS title in America with Audi
-In 2007, was best Audi driver and LMP1 class winner at Houston when Audi last drove a race in Texas
“The track at Austin inspires a lot of enthusiasm – in Formula 1, in the sports car scene and among motorcycle racers. The circuit features very fast sections, as well as narrow hairpin turns, long straights and a winding last section. We expect high temperatures and together with our tire partner Michelin have got to thoroughly prepare for this. I’ve celebrated many big successes in America. The fans at Austin can look forward to a nice sports car festival when the WEC and the ALMS are running on the same weekend.”

In March, Audi has clinched its latest sportscar win in America in the 2013 Sebring 12 Hours

Loïc Duval about the track at Austin

“Austin is new on the calendar. The starting straight is an unusually steep uphill section. This results in a late braking point in front of a hairpin turn where body contact may be hard to avoid. A series of five fast turns follows where it’s crucial to have good aerodynamics. The fluid rhythm is slowed a bit by the tapering of turn 8. This makes the car a bit calmer on approaching turns 9 and 10. A short straight is followed by the next hairpin turn where several cars fit side by side. It’s important to accelerate early for the next straight at the end of which there are good overtaking opportunities. The radii of turns 13 and 15 almost mirror each other. The next triple right-hander requires courage and a good line. After a left-hand turn, a hairpin leads back to the start and finish.”

In 2000, Audi celebrated a sportscar win in Texas when the thermometers rose to above 40 degrees

Pirelli World Challenge: Audi Sport customer racing effort in North America

By Tarek Ramchani

The Audi brand is very well represented in the Pirelli World Challenge this year. GMG Racing is fielding a full set of Audi R8 LMS cars, with their driver James Sofronas still in contention for the driver's title. In addition to GMG and JCR Motorsports, DragonSpeed has also joined the demanding SCCA series with their Audi R8 LMS ultra, a premiere for the new spec car in top North American sportscar racing.

Here is a video from the Pirelli World Challenge official Youtube channel showing how committed Audi Sport customer racing is in the series. Technical support for the privateer teams, with one big target: the championship title. Audi is also looking forward to a strong 2014 campaign as Pirelli World Challenge is set to welcome full specification FIA GT3 cars in their GT class.
