FIA WEC: Audi in front for the third time in WEC qualifying

Audi Press Release

  •          Fässler/Lotterer/Tréluyer on pole at São Paulo
  •          Duval/Kristensen/McNish complete front row
  •          Third consecutive best time in qualifying after Spa and Le Mans

Ingolstadt/São Paulo, August 31, 2013 – Audi has created an ideal starting base for round four of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The two Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars of Audi Sport Team Joest qualified for the front row of the 6-hour race with a difference of only five hundredths of a second.

The two Audi driver squads fought a thrilling battle for the best positions on the grid. Marcel Fässler (CH) on his two qualifying laps in car number ‘1’ met with his team-mate Loïc Duval (F) in number ‘2.’ Afterward, Benoît Tréluyer (F) and Tom Kristensen (DK) took over the cockpits. In the aggregate of the four fastest lap times, this year’s Le Mans winners initially had a lead of 0.172 seconds. But then Tréluyer upped the ante once more and in the average of all the times posted achieved an advantage of 0.05 seconds over the sister car. After Duval had last clinched the pole position at Le Mans in June, car number ‘1,’ just like at Spa in May, managed the leap to the top. Challenger Toyota with a gap of 0.277 seconds took third place in qualifying at São Paulo.

While the result was close on Saturday it hardly allows any conclusions to be drawn about the relative strengths on Sunday. On the track at Interlagos with its narrow and relatively slow middle sector, Audi, due to the regulations, is not allowed to use the hybrid system of the R18 e-tron quattro below 120 km/h. In addition, Audi Sport Team Joest is expecting to make an additional pit stop compared to the strongest competitor, Toyota, as the fuel tank capacity of the diesel hybrid sports car, due to the regulations as well, is significantly smaller.

The 6-hour race at São Paulo starts at 12:00, local time, on Sunday. Round four of the 2013 WEC season can be watched by live streaming on the internet at www.audi-motorsport.com and at www.fiawec.com. Eurosport will broadcast a summary of the race in Germany on Tuesday, September 3, from 9.15 to 9.45.

Quotes after qualifying

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): “Qualifying has shown that we’ve got a drivers’ squad that drives on a very high and consistent level. I’m very pleased with grid positions one and two – that was a superb performance. But on Sunday a new task is awaiting us. We expect having to make one more pit stop than our competitors from Toyota as the fuel tank capacity was changed once more before Le Mans. But we’re going to give everything to turn this into a good result anyhow.”

Chris Reinke (Head of LMP): “Our drivers were very concentrated, the cars presented themselves perfectly and the team did a very good job. That was a very motivating start to the weekend. We’re well prepared and can hardly wait for the race to start.”

Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest): “After the free practice sessions, we expected such a close qualifying. Positions one and two are very good starting bases. Furthermore, car number ‘1’ on clinching the best time secured a point in the drivers’ championship. The cars were running well, all the drivers are pleased. Tom Kristensen had a small spin toward the end and wanted to go out once more. But we’ve got to think about Sunday because the tires from qualifying are prescribed for the beginning of the race as well. The fans can look forward to an entertaining race.”

Marcel Fässler (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1): “Only in qualifying for the Sebring 12 Hours the gaps between our cars were even closer this year than they were this time. In the end, only the time counts, no matter how small the gap is. More important than this difference is the fact that we made up a point in the Championship: A small step in a big recovery!”

André Lotterer (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1): “I can superbly rely on my team-mates. The whole squad did a first-class job. That it’s so close is a good sign for both cars. The important thing is for us to stay in front of Toyota. I hope that the positions will remain the same tomorrow...”

Benoît Tréluyer (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1): “The task was pretty difficult. On new tires, Marcel delivered a first-rate job. I wasn’t so confident in the beginning because I caught other cars and my car had significant understeer. In the end, I managed some pretty good laps anyhow. It’s important that the tires remained in good condition for the race. And of course on Sunday it’ll be about strategy as well. Things are looking good but we’ve got to maintain our concentration.”

Loïc Duval (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2): “The positive thing was that our Audi R18 e-tron quattro feels very good. I suppose I was a bit too conservative on my laps but the times weren’t bad despite that. Now we’re in second place even though we’d have preferred being in first. But we’re part of the front and absolutely competitive. A year ago, Toyota were far ahead of us, now we’re in front.”

Tom Kristensen (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2): “Our car was running well and my first timed lap was fast. Unfortunately, the second one wasn’t quite so good anymore. When I saw my time of 1m 21.3s I knew that position one was realistic. But unfortunately I hit the left curb in turn one and spun. I let the car coast and thus saved the tires for the race. Congratulations to our team-mates on their flawless performance.”

Allan McNish (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2): “For Audi, the solid line-up on the front row is fantastic. Loïc and Tom, unfortunately, didn’t always catch a clear lap. The important thing is that all of us feel comfortable in our Audi R18 e-tron quattro. On Sunday I’m expecting a very hard race because Toyota so far have usually been a bit stronger in the race than in qualifying. But we’ve got a very good car for this task.”

Portuguese GT: Novadriver race victory and crowned champions in Portimão

By Johan Laubscher

The Portuguese GT Championship was at Portimão this weekend, where Team Novadriver continued their successful 2013 season.

This was round four of the Portuguese GT, now known as the Supercars Portugal Series, and it was run together with round three of the Supercars International Series. Team Novadriver entered both of their Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. Car #1 was driven by Cesar Campanico, Carlos Vieira and Mikko Eskelinen. Car #10 was in the hands of João Figueiredo, João Ramos and Lourenço Beirão da Veiga.

They qualified second (car #1) and third (car #10). The race itself went very well for the team, and the #1 crew of Campanico, Vieira and Eskelinen crossed the line victorious once again. This race victory also clinched the driver's title for the race winners, meaning that Novadriver took their second consecutive driver’s title. Their teammates finished in third, reinforcing their second place in the championship points.

The next Portuguese GT round will be taking place at Braga in mid-September.

In the first qualifying session they took pole position with a fastest time of 1:28.834. The Audi car was followed by two Ferrari 458 GT3 cars in second and third.

In the second qualifying session the MTM Audi performed well again. A fine third for Jarvis and Schöffler. Up ahead it was a Ferrari 458 GT3 1-2, the two cars from Team Ukraine.

Superstars: Gianni Morbidelli Audi RS 5 quattro fourth in Donington Park qualifying

By Tarek Ramchani

In addition to the Italian GT Championqhip at Imola, Audi Sport Italia is also competing in the Superstars Series at Donington Park this weekend.

A single Audi RS 5 quattro is in Britian for their regular driver, Gianni Morbidelli. The three-time Superstars Series champion qualified his #45 Audi in a strong fourth, after a very close session. Not bad at all, given how penalized the Audi RS 5 quattro is now compared to the rivals from the other brands.

Gianni Morbidelli was only 0.320 behind pole-sitter Luigi Ferrari and his much more powerful AMG Mercedes-Benz C63. Second was Vitantonio Liuzi with the factory supported #15 AMG Mercedes-Benz C63 (Mercedes Romeo Ferraris). Third was the #4 BMW M3 of Giovanni Berton (Team BMW Dinamic).

The two races are set for tomorrow on the British track. Motors TV will provide live coverage for both races.

Audi R8 LMS Cup: Dominant Alex Yoong with back to back wins in Sepang

Audi R8 LMS Cup Press Release

  •          Round 8 win sees Yoong regain series lead from Adderly Fong
  •          18 year old newcomer Thong caps excellent drive with fifth place
  •          While the cup wraps up, teams prepare for the 12-hour MMER

Beijing/Sepang, August 31, 2013 – Round 8 of the Audi R8 LMS Cup saw a dominant performance by Alex Yoong. Leading from start to finish the Malaysian local hero took the chequered flag ahead of "Franky" Cheng Congfu from China and Adderly Fong from Hong Kong. Yoong's second win in just as many days saw him regaining the overall championship lead with 141 points, ahead of Fong (132) and Lee (121), before heading into Rounds 9 and 10 in Shanghai, China.

"We saw a very competitive speed race in extremely hot weather conditions. The fact that all entries finished the race once again shows the great reliability of our GT3 race cars. It was an excellent debut of our brand cup in Malaysia. The circuit and facilities are fantastic. And the passion of the motorsport fans here at Sepang has been great", commented Rene Koneberg, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia.

It was an excellent debut of our brand cup in Malaysia. The circuit and facilities are fantastic. And the passion of the motorsport fans here at Sepang has been great", commented Rene Koneberg, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia.

While Yoong managed to stay clear at the start, Cheng ducked down the inside of Fong on turn one, with the Hong Kong racer falling back to third. Marchy Lee retained his fourth position. The top four drivers opened up a gap from the chasing pack behind them, pushing each other to the limit but unable to close the gap on the car in front. Cheng underlined his strong performance with the fastest lap of the day. Yet, it was Yoong who set the pace and dominated from start to finish. The positions were unchanged by the chequered flag, giving Yoong his second win in two days, followed by Cheng, Fong and Lee.

Behind the top four, the race saw an impressive battle for fifth position. On lap three Sun Zheng tried to overtake Kyong-Ouk You, however his manoeuvre allowed room for Wei Fung Thong to pass both of them. Thong, an eighteen year old talent from Hong Kong, pulled away from the more experienced drivers and finished the race in an excellent fifth position ahead of Korean You.

Italian driver Massimo Vignali claimed a superb seventh place for Round 8 of the Audi R8 LMS Cup. He came out on top in a close battle with Jeffrey Li and also managed to overtake Sun Zheng, after the Chinese driver spun towards the end of the race.

In the amateur competition, Aaron Kwok was able to underline his strong form in Sepang by overtaking Alex Au on lap one. Au battled back and it was on lap six that he finally managed to regain the lead from Kwok and defend it until the end of the race. With back to back wins in Malaysia and a total of 176 points, Alex Au managed to wrap up the overall amateur title. With three races to go, and 90 points clear of second positioned Eric K, he cannot be caught.

Also decided in Sepang was the special Dealer trophy for the 2013 championship. Adderly Fong's third place meant that Team KLM secured the title for participating Audi dealerships.

With the Malaysia rounds over for the Audi R8 LMS Cup, attention now turns to the 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) taking place at Sepang on Sunday. Audi has four entries in the challenging endurance race, three of which come from the Audi R8 LMS Cup. One entry comes from an Audi supported team of the GT Asia. Altogether, eight drivers from the Audi R8 LMS Cup will also get behind the wheel for the MMER.

The next race weekend of the Audi R8 LMS Cup will be held at the Shanghai International Circuit (25-27 October) in China.

Alex Yoong:

"I had a good start unlike yesterday. I had a very controlled race, which did not allow room for any major mistakes – in that way the race was fairly calm. I am very relieved as the previous race weekend in South Korea was a bit of a disaster, which meant I was feeling the pressure a little. I am very fortunate to have the support of both my friends and family, which makes a huge difference."

"Franky" Cheng Congfu:

"I was lucky to get a good start and squeeze into second position to get behind Alex (Yoong). Like Alex said, he was in control most of the race, however I was pleased with my pace and at one point even able to close the gap a bit. I did have one scary moment where I almost lost control, and because of how intense the competition is – every second counts."

Adderly Fong:

"I am fairly satisfied with the race results, I knew it was Alex's home circuit, therefore we viewed this as damage reduction for the championship. I just tried to focus on getting as many points as I could. I made a mistake in yesterday's race but today was fairly steady."

Alex Au:

"I am happy to have won the amateur cup with my back to back wins here in Sepang. I knew I could do it, after I was calculating the points last night. I sat behind Aaron (Kwok) for a while trying to ensure there were no mistakes until I finally took the chance to overtake him."

ADAC GT Masters: Positive qualifying for Audi teams at Lausitzring

By Tarek Ramchani

The ADAC GT Masters is at the Eurospeedway Lausitzring for the sixth meeting of the season. As usual six Audi R8 LMS ultra have been entered with some good performances in the qualifying sessions today.

In the first qualifying session, championship title contenders Christopher Mies and René Rast, ended in a very strong second place. The two Audi youngsters are sharing the #27 Audi R8 LMS ultra from Prosperia C.Abt Racing. Two more Audis were within the top 10. The #28 R8 LMS ultra from Prosperia C.Abt Racing driven by Christer Jöns and Markus Winkelhock was eighth, whilst the #1 MS Racing entry of Sebastian Asch and Florian Stoll was ninth fastest. The remaining three cars were respectively in eleventh with #26 of Rahel Frey and Christopher Haase (Prosperica C.Abt Racing), nineteenth with #16 Audi of Philip Geipel and Frank Schmickler (THE BOSS YACO RACING) and twenty-first with #100 R8 of Daniel Dobitsch and Aditya Patel (MS Racing).

Later in the second qualifying session the Audi squad was not as strong as in the first one. Audi R8 LMS Cup: Alex Yoong wins in front of his home crowd in Malaysia

Audi R8 LMS Cup Press Release

  •          Yoong regained lead after dropping two places at eventful start
  •          Marchy Lee finishes second ahead of Franky Cheng Congfu in third
  •          Adderly Fong narrowly keeps overall lead after fourth place finish

Beijing/Sepang, August 30, 2013 – The Audi R8 LMS Cup debut at Sepang, Malaysia saw Alex Yoong delight his home fans by taking the chequered flag in front of Hong Kong racer Marchy Lee. One of the closest fought races of the season saw 'Franky' Cheng Congfu take the final podium position, with barely a second covering the front three as they crossed the finish line. Finishing fourth, Adderly Fong kept his overall championship lead with a total of 117 points, closely followed by Alex Yoong (115 points) and Marchy Lee (109 points).

"We saw a very close battle at the top, which underlines the truly competitive nature of our brand cup. Congratulations to Alex for the win in front of his home fans. After his promising qualifying, Adderly (Fong) was a bit unlucky. But I am sure he will be back determined tomorrow", says Rene Koneberg, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia.

The race got off to an exciting start. Whilst pole sitter Alex Yoong was intent on keeping the attacking Adderly Fong wide, 'Franky' Cheng Congfu overtook both at turn one. With the field bunched together, second on the grid, Marchy Lee, was able to take the inside line and come out of turn one as race leader. Alex Yoong's disappointing start was compounded when Korean racer Kyong-Ouk You jumped up to third place ahead of him, while championship leader, Adderly Fong, found himself dropping down to sixth.

By lap seven Yoong had begun to pressure Cheng for second place after he had taken Kyong-Ouk You on lap three. With the two pushing hard for points, Yoong managed to get past Cheng with seven laps to go and give himself a clear run at Marchy Lee.

With three laps to go, Yoong had closed the gap on leader Lee to just half a second, ensuring an exciting finish to the inaugural Audi R8 LMS Cup race in Malaysia. Coming into turns seven and eight, backmarker Benjamin Lee spun in front of the leaders; the front two showed their class by carefully negotiating the difficult situation. By the end of the lap, coming into turn fifteen, Yoong was finally able to dive down the inside of Marchy Lee and take the lead to the joy of his home fans.

With just two laps to go Yoong began to pull away, however on turn fourteen, disaster almost struck when he went wide allowing Lee and Cheng to close the gap once again. But Yoong managed to shut up shop to effectively end the battle by taking the chequered flag ahead of Lee and Cheng. Championship leader Adderly Fong battled back from the disappointment of his unlucky start to finish in fourth place and remain at the top of the leaderboard.

Alex Au from Hong Kong won the amateur competition. His fellow countryman, singer and actor Aaron Kwok, once again showed his racing talent by leading the gentleman class until the very last lap, when a mistake saw him spin off. Kwok was second crossing the line, but was later handed a 30 second penalty for an incident earlier in the race in which his car had contact with the Audi R8 LMS of Naomi Zhang Ran. The penalty meant that Kwok officially finished the race in fourth position. Second place in the amateur competition went to Jacky Yeung, ahead of Ren Wei in third.

Round 8 of the 2013 Audi R8 LMS Cup will start Saturday, August 31, at 10am local time at Sepang International Circuit and – as with all races of the season – will be broadcast live on www.audir8lmscup.com. Starting positions for Round 8 on Saturday are determined by the second fastest time of each driver during qualifying, meaning Alex Yoong will be on pole again. Adderly Fong will start from second place, Cheng Congfu from third.

Alex Yoong:

"The start was interesting, Franky just suddenly appeared. I was really aggressive going into turn one. By turn two I was trying to keep people behind me but found myself dropping down to fifth. Marchy (Lee) was quick all race, which made catching him very hard but the challenging temperatures saw our tires degrade, his more than mine. I want to thank all my friends and family here in Malaysia for the fantastic support they showed - it encouraged me to keep pushing."

Marchy Lee:

"I decided at the start to push to the limit. I was looking for an opportunity and was aware of Franky (Cheng Congfu) pushing Alex (Yoong) wide and took my chance. As you could see, the tires went quickly because of the heat. Alex managed his better than I managed mine. Obviously this made navigating incredibly difficult. I am very happy for Alex to have taken the win in his home country."

'Franky' Cheng Congfu:

"The start was problematic as I was over aggressive but saw my opportunity and took it. I tried to defend the outside line from Alex. Marchy saw this and went inside. After this I tried to calm down and settle into the race but it has been tough so far for me in Sepang. It is good to see Alex win in his home country."

Zolder 24 Hours: Pole position and lap record for WRT Audi

By Johan Laubscher

Belgian Audi Club Team WRT has taken pole position for the Zolder 24 hours, an event wherein the team has been unbeaten since 2011.

The Zolder 24 Hours will be taking place this weekend, with a twenty-one car grid. The WRT Audi R8 LMS ultra will be the only FIA GT3 car in the field, and they are the clear favourites for the race win. WRT has entered the #1 Audi R8 LMS ultra with drivers Laurens Vanthoor, Anthony Kumpen, Enzo Ide and Bert Longin, all of whom are previous Zolder 24 hours race winners.

Practice and qualifying took place on Thursday and the Audi showed its superior pace. Without any surprise the WRT Audi was at the top of the time sheets during all of the sessions. They ended the day with the overall pole position. The pole lap was set by Laurens Vanthoor, a staggering GT3 lap record breaking 1:28.712.

The race is set to begin at 16:00 local time tomorrow. We wish the best of luck to Belgian Audi Club Team WRT for this 24 Hour race in Belgium.

It is also interesting to note that the WRT Audi R8 LMS ultra has been fitted with the original 2013 rear diffuser. The car has also been seen with a number of rear wing combinations during the running on Thursday. It has been fitted with the 2012 specification rear wings, as well as the 2013 rear wing during the final qualifying run.

DTM: Wet DTM debut for di Grassi and Müller

Audi Press Release

Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz prepared themselves for the final spurt in the DTM beginning at Oschersleben on September 15 with a three-day test at Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
Rain showers on all three days hindered the test programs of all three manufacturers to such an extent that the results and lap times should be treated with caution. Testing for Audi were championship leader Mike Rockenfeller, the double DTM champion Mattias Ekström and for the first time sportscar driver Lucas di Grassi and youngster Nico Müller. The two DTM newcomers quickly settled in the team and gave the Audi Sport technicians interesting opinions and feedback about the Audi RS 5 DTM. All four drivers were in action on all three days and completed a total of about 2,700 test kilometers.

This Is Why We Need Not Argue or Debate with Feminists

Have a look at the following, which very thoroughly catalogues the conversational behaviors of the MAJORITY of feminists:

http://bloganddiscussion.com/antifeminism/237/typical-reproaches-by-feminists-against-anti-feminists/

Yes, I say that most feminists act this way. Mind you, I don't claim that every individual feminist exhibits ALL of the despicable behaviors listed here. Clearly, some will display some of these and others will display others. Also, subtlety may vary. But taken as a whole, the list outlines feminism's rhetorical modus operandi with admirable clarity and fullness. Indeed, most of the significant bases are covered.

Let none inform you that this "has nothing to do with feminism". Au contraire, this kind of garbage is the psychic brick and mortar and structural iron of the entire women's movement. It is not fringe or marginal behavior; it is core behavior. Take it away, and you would get a core collapse or implosion. Truly, it is the "is-ness of the business."

Let me explain. If God would somehow put a hex on all feminist-identified women, so that every time one of them tried to talk or type such filth she suffered a violent attack of diarrhea, what repercussions do you figure this would have upon feminism as a movement? Well first off, they would all discover right quick that it was not the best idea to "talk shit." Don't you agree that this is what they would all discover right quick? Aye, and so they would! But taking it to the next stage, I might predict that feminism, as a going concern, would go straight over a cliff in, oh. . . maybe three weeks.

Just imagine: Amanda Marcotte opens her blog editor, starts telling us that men who won't shut up about false accusation are secret rapists, and blammo! Seligmann's Revenge!

Or some hack at Emily's List is composing yet another press release about "the war on women" and. . well, she gets a spasm of self-fulfilling prophecy!

Do you follow me? If all feminists everywhere were forced to behave like honest, grown-up human beings for a change, how long do you really think feminism would stay in business?

Yes, the existence of feminism as an earthly force depends entirely on making certain trashy behaviors "available" to feminist-identified women - or any other women for that matter. The sudden unavailability of these same behaviors would force everybody to be honest - and that would be the end of feminism!

You know what else? Feminism could clean up its act very, very easily if one of the leaders got up on her bully pulpit and laid down the law. Let's say that some feminist Big Cheese, of comparable stature to Gloria Steinem, made a speech or wrote an article addressed to "the women's movement". Suppose that in said communique, our feminist Big Cheese said something like the following:
"Sisters, we need to introspect and see if we can do better. Feminism is getting more and more unpopular, and I find this concerning. It especially troubles me that so many of us behave so shabbily in our transactions with the non-feminist public. A lot of people even perceive us as a hate movement, and I feel that we need to ask ourselves how such a perception may have come about. Seriously, we must stop playing crooked billiards with the rest of the world - and I have a list of specific recommendations that we should put into practice immediately."
As the old saying goes, the fish stinks from the head down. So a morally edifying message from one or more high feminist mucky-mucks would be a message indeed, and the reverberations would travel quickly. Oh yes, you may be sure of it. The average feminist is a mindless follower, and when the shepherd speaks, the sheep listen!

Seriously, all it would take for feminism to "clean house", would be for feminist leaders to start handing out brooms and issuing instructions.

But I don't see any feminist mucky-mucks heeding my advice any time soon. . . . do you? Of course you don't. So needless to say, this counts as another strike against feminism as a whole. And so long as that holistic state of reality continues, I am not duty-bound to engage feminism any less solipsistically than feminism has engaged the rest of us.

Ah yes . .  the rest of us! I am so glad that "we" are not properly a WE at all. "We" are not a targetable group or point source of any kind. We are not even a "movement", although you could argue that we are a collection of movements. But in the end we are simply ambient. We are simply the atmosphere, and we are all around, everywhere, on every side, being nothing less than the entire non-feminist population of planet Earth. Hence, we are Fred Everyman and Sally Everywoman - and feminist, you had best watch your back because we are certainly behind your back! We are also in your face, and to your right and to your left - you know, just. . . . everywhere!.
